Monte Isola is an impressive island that rises 400m up from Iseo lake in the foothills of the Alps. It has a population of under 1,700 people and it's trails make for the perfect place for an adventurous day out in good company.
The only way to get there is by boat or helicopter and once there the only way is up.
It takes an hour to an hour and a half to get to the top along well-maintained forest trails.
There are very few cars on the island - it feels like a journey back in time.
Finally, the lake shores have a wonderful selection of restaurants and local lake fish for a well-deserved lunch.
Lake Iseo is not the largest of the northern Italian lakes but it is arguably the most magical. Until the Cristo Floating Piers in 2016 not many people outside of Italy knew about it. This means very few tourists and an authenticity that leaves a unique impression.
The surrounding Alps are spectacular, especially when seen from the summit of Monte Isola. On a clear day you can see from the Appenines to the higher Alpine peaks up the Val Camonica valley.
It doesn't matter whether you like action and adventure sports or relaxing lakeside strolls, there is something for everyone.
See Visit Iseo for other leisure activities.
Brescia and Bergamo are both only 30 min away from Iseo lake. They are fascinating smaller cities that both have a lot to offer in terms of museums, art and culture.
The area is probably most famous for its Franciacorta wine. This DOC sparkling white wine is made using the Champenois technique. There are 104 vineyards in the area. Why not go for a visit and a tasting?
Many of the restaurants are internationally recognised but even the small Osterias have unique local tastes to experience with a glass of Bollicine!
